derive a degree of importance which of itself it
never could have possessed: and when the brief
of the original and integer integral note had thus
taken root as it were and maintained for a certain time acquired an
importance of its own, the half of that half
might at length be brought upon the carpet
and so on.

In By proceeding thus gradually it is
difficult to say to how small a dimension
the sum quantum of this species of paper currency
may be reduced. A note sum which if presented offered in the first instance would be regarded with contempt
and derision might come at length to
be received at the end of a successive and gradually decreasing series of larger notes
£1 Annuity Notes might at length be brought
into the circulation as with the £1 Bank Notes.

The only limits to the reduction seem to be
those which are set by the trouble and thence
the expense of paying these Annuities. Should
the size of the notes be ever reduced thus low
or nearly thus low, it will be probably found
necessary, or at least convenient to reduce the
number of times of payment in the year, from two to
one. If as expected it were to be found
that the greater part remained unclaimed the force of this objection
would be proportionably diminished.
