The Will it is true, cannot do every thing
with the Judgement; but it can do a great
deal. It cannot turn it on the sudden:
Gutta caveat Capidem - The still force - - of quotations will {burst}{prise} the hardest rocks
but it can turn it by degrees. It
may concentrate attention to all the arguments
on one side: it may keep out of sight
all the arguments on the other. How
wretched must be that cause, that cannot be made
to triumph by such means? I know that
I resolve not to bestowe on one side if I can help it
the arguments on one side are contained
in such and such books 3 What do I do?
I resolve determine not to read them. But some one
upbraids me with this he puts them into
- curiosity invites
my hands - I am forced to read them
What to do then? - What? & leave it alone to itself
interest is not so much hard driven at a loss. [I am not
to learn, that] the counters arguments on the other side of the
question which I would turn my back upon
thwart my interest. The writers who produce
those arguments thwart my interest.

One should be at little difficulty to give a catalogue
of fundamentals of Christianity upon
the footing of its body a system beneficial to
Society - One has something to go by; one has
a standard - Depart from that, you have
none - The only account you can then give
of a list of fundamentals is this,- It is a lot of
these opinions propositions, [useful or useless] frivolous or
important, that have happen'd to make most
noise - The composition of the God head
is a fundamental with our Orthodox: the
number of fingers the sign of the cross should
be made with was a fundamental with the
Russians: The unintelligible efficacy of a certain
unintelligible grace among the French: the
the appearance of a light upon the breast of thecertain
monks on mount Tabor among the Greeks
of Constantinople. One might make the tour
of the Globe, & find every where the same
sort of fundamentals of the same stamp

They [tend to]These endeavours render one unhappy - They give
one pain. What is it that is the object of
aversion? It is not that what which gives pain?
The man who justles against one and thea caused and
treads upon one toe in the gives me pain
I am angry with him. What of his In vain would
I say to myself, the man did it without
design - he has no enmity to me - Say
what I will, while the pain lasts I am
still angry with him. What if his weight
were to rest upon press on me during life my Toe so long as I
lived? [Tis just See is it the case] with the authors
of these arguments - I am angry with them
& so continue. Their portraiturepicture of them blackens in
my mind. What is to their advantage, gives
me pleasure pain to think of: what is to their disadvantage
gives me pleasure.

But how came all this you to bring yourself
to all this violence at first? You thought it
then necessary - you acted against conviction?

Nothing is certain under the Sun - examine with
what impartiality I will - I may be mistaken
Let me later It would be a sad thing to be mistaken on the
wrong side - let me take some care of that.
Wretched it would be indeed to add loss of happiness
to loss of wisdom -

Wiser men than myself have
Who am I that should oppose myself unto ?
That's not interest - that's modesty. & Modesty
is a virtue Aye, let me stick to that

Ask an Orthodox man of orthodoxy any where,
what is a fundamental? his answer comes
to this - it is what I am most earnest about?
ask him how he comes to be so earnest about
it? it is because other people are - How
come there other people to be so? - it is almost always
because one man having a once upon a time two men having a dispute with another one of them
& having the word of it, grew angry, & being the best intriguer
got the magistrate to oppress his adversary.

They have made us subscribe to Xis descent into Hell-
it is Gods mercy they is into their heads to make
us subscribe to a map of the Voyage - When the 2d person was

thus employ'd, how was the intercourse kept up between him &
the other two?
