intolerance weaken, as far as in them lies,
this best of all temporal pleas for Christianity.
And Meantime to whom is the calming of the fury
of intolerance principally to be ascribed? in France
for example where Protestants are now already in
possession of rights to which have been repeatedly

Church Intolerance

After No 4 let VI.

without passion, or under the influence of the contrary
affection passion. [+] A distinguished character A friend of mine brought together

men are ready to cry, "I

one day two philosophers, a French and an
English one. At different opportunities each took
him aside — "Good God! what company you
have introduced me into! Why that Frenchman
is a professed Atheist! I did not think there
had been such an animal in nature." — Shortly
after in no came the Frenchman's turn. —
"What a strange affectation, here among friends,
for that your countryman to pretend pretend to deny
his being an atheist: and this too to persist in it too,
after I had quoted Atheism to him from his
own writings, fifty times over." — This English
was one of the ablest most zealous, and most
distinguished defenders of Christianity: and
if the Christianity sincere Christian is were not to be found in
him, I should never think of looking for it one elsewhere
Probably the work quoted upon him
was one of a purely philosophical nature in
which no occasion of making an explicit Declaration
of Christian sentiments had ocurred occurred.
