The only considerate
use of Divinity with
respect to this life
is the promoting so
much of each mans
happiness as depends
upon the conduct of
others
True knowledge of the , inducements & power to avail
oneself of that knowledge
For affecting so much of this end as
[concerns his own] more immediately concerns
himself every man has sufficient motives
or inducements naturally implanted within his own bosom:
knowledge of the best means is all he
among those which his situation places within
his power is all that art can give him
and for this purpose the art of Ethics promises may seem <add>might</add> of itself
to be tolerably sufficient

To bring him to pay a sufficient regard
to the happiness of others of those around him
is the great difficulty - Mere morality is looked
The inducements pointed
out

upon by many as scarcely adequate to the
task: and Theology or Religion is called on
and to supply the deficiency.

Thus it is that the science of Theology
has two main distinguishable objects: to teach each man how
to attain the greatest measure of felicity in a
future life: and to furnish him with supplemental
inducements motives [+] calculated to prevent
[+] for complicating the
measure of motives necessary
to induce him
not to disturb commits respect but rather
to promote

the well-being of his fellow creatures in the present
life

Note?
3(a)
The inducements
supplied by religion
would not be worth
applying to the
mere purpose of
promoting self-regarding
prudence.

Inscrudum?
Religion is considered by some as furnishing
inducements for the enforcement of a man's duty
to himself: but this notion will scarcely bear
examination. If the -approaching inconveniences
which merit imprudence in the present
life are not sufficient to compass prevent
imprudence, the remote punishments inducements borrowed
from a future life can scarcely be applied
with any advantage: since the punishments
that are operate on that character must be
make up in intensity magnitude what they want in
propinquity and apparent certainty. To draw employ
upon the funds the treasures <add>stores</add> of future punishment for such on such
a purpose a service would be like breaking children
upon the wheel to deter other children from
making themselves sick getting an indigestion. or biting their nails
