The impropriety
of it is equally incontestable
whether
the subject be important
or frivolous,
easy or difficult
Whatsoever be the complexion of the subject,
important or frivolous, perspicacious or obscure easy or difficult
the absurdity and tyranny of such an interposition
is equally indisputable: If frivolous
the more so, the less worth while to seek to cultivate
encourage it by such means; if important and
clear the more so the less necessary: if important
and difficult, the more so difficult
the greater the hazard and if the more important
the more greater may be the mischief
of a mistake. If of all sciences theology
is the most important it is in almost equal
proportion the most difficult: the most compendious
proof of the difficulty is the multitude of
the books that have been written in the view
to solve it: a multitude to which that of
all the books that to which all the other arts
and sciences put together have given birth
bears but small proportion. Numerous are
the systems that relative to this art or science
that have been thus supported inculcated by force by
coercive power; and as they are all inconsistent
with each other, it follows that there must be
