that the proposition, whatsoever might be the meaning
of it was true. Here it would To warrant his
making such requisition it would not be necessary
that the words should present to his mind any ideas
at all. — A man speaks for example in
a language Arabic which I do not understand: if on my estimation here he appears to
be me a man of veracity, in proportion to the
persuasion I have of his veracity, I believe that
what he said was true: my belief is founded on
my opinion of his veracity, not on any ideas the
words he has used uttered present to me. Is this the
case with the creed in question called the Athanasian?

to be words uttered by God, that the words of scripture
itself in the general tenor of it does not
pretend to be contain in what we here mean by strictness of speech the
words of God, (or being the words the original being nothing but the
words of some human neither however howsoever divinely

pretend to contain present the words of scripture.

that the Author pretends to give words of his
own as more clear and more intelligible. He
takes the words afforded by different passages of
Scripture, examines the ideas they respectively
present, finds them not those ideas

nonsense
which they themselves
do not so
much as profess
to understand
any further as to
be in them

not sufficiently
clear for the purpose, compares them
with other ideas presented by phrases of his own
devising, and substitutes the latter as clearer
more intelligible than the Scripture language
and better adapted to the purpose. of raising
in the minds of his readers ideas which shall
give represent the objects in question, ideas which
shall quadrate with the truth of things. Ignorance
in the mouth of unassuming diffidence may be
admitted as an apology for nonsense: what but
what is to be said of that man who rioting in
point blank contradiction the grossest of all nonsense, point-blank
contradiction, pleads should plead ignorance as a warrant
for assuming an authority beyond any that
ought to be trusted to the clearest and profoundest
knowledge.
