Ch. 6 II
§.1. of
Part III.
Indigenous x Adoptive
(5) (3)
In so far as regard
is paid to the character
of the persons on
the ground of whose
judgments the persuasion
is entertained -
the persuasion
will be naturally
proportioned
to the degree of
suppo ascribed trustworthiness.
Such
judgment may be
said to be founded
in authority.
When the person or persons In so far as to the character of
the person or persons on the ground of whose supposed
judgment the adoptive persuasion is entertained, a
special regard is paid, in which case the proportion subject of
in question persuasion being given, the intensity of
such adoptive persuasion will naturally be proportioned
to the degree of trustworthiness, regard being had to in relation to the
subject in question, ascribed to the person in whose
authority the adoptive judgment is grounded, the such
judgment may be said to be grounded in have for its ground special
authority — or simply on authority.
Consideration of
character being out
of the question, the
judgment may be
said to be grounded
on imitation or
indiscriminative adoption.
In so far as all consideration or regard
to the character of the person in question as above
is considered as absent and out of the case, the adoptive
judgment may be said to have for its ground
the general principle of imitation - the principle of imitation
or under taken at large - or indiscriminative adoption taken
at large.
Such is the analogy
of men,, that
(setting aside special
reasons to the
contrary) whatever
is done by one man
forms a rational ground for
imitation by another
— a judgment formed
by one man - ground
for do. to be formed
by another.
Such is the analogy between man and man —
between any two individuals of this species, that - setting
aside those special reasons to the contrary which are a
such vast abundance and variety according to the particular
nature of the particular case are liable to present themselves
in such abundance — whatsoever is not done by
any one man forms a rational cause of a ground
for imitation on the part of many others; whatsoever judgment
, whether or persuasion is formed and or
by any one man forms a rational cause of
or ground for a judgment or persuasion to the same effect on the part of any other.
