The effect of
the will on
persuasion not
certain or immediate
no torments could
persuade the

this paper excels not.

What every body perceives that on persuasion
by the will — and consequently by three forms - viz. pleasure and pain hope
and fear, — by which alone will is felt to be acted upon from without — no such
power is exercised, the effect of which is either immediate
or certain. You before whose eyes this paper is spread

On the other hand, that on persuasive that the same
out, could you by the whole wealth of the mass of worldly
wealth — could you by the utmost torment which your nature
is capable of sustaining, be made engaged <add>brought</add> all at once
to disbelieve the existence of it?

On the other hand, that on persuasion, by the
will, thence by hope and fear power productive such
as at the long run run has been productive of operated with very considerable
effects has been wont to be exercised — neither
is this a proposition that seems much exposed to doubt.
But it is as little
to be doubted that
the effect on persuasion
by the will
is considerable.
