§.1. Abstr.
Part 3. Relig

[Internal subject of persuasion] In each of the above
three cases the thing — the only thing as yet spoken of in
the character of the subject of the persuasion — viz. the supposed
matter of faith — the text — and the inference
is something that external which relation had to the mind in
question is external to it. But [a fa faculty which
in some cases the mind appears to have —]
an operation
which in some cases it appears to have performed —
a corresponding faculty which in some cases it appears
to have, is — the the sitting in judgment as it were upon this
or that judgment of its own: and in so far as any
operation of this sort takes place, the persuasion are additional
sort of persuasion has place, a persuasion of

the persuasion ultimately formed has an additional
subject which may be termed an internal one.

2
In all these
cases the subject
is external. But
an operation when
a preceding mans own judgment
is judged
of, the persuasion
formed had has
an additional
internal subject.

[Something of this sort is what seems actually
to have place, as often as where] that sort of case is
exemplified, in which, the affections applying themselves
to the judgment, set up as it were a later cognizance of it as it
were and
persuasion which is entertained or endeavoured
to be entertained, set up another as it were
another judgment to take cognizance of it, and for
the purpose of increasing the intensity, shewn to the
wind up to the highest possible pitch the approbation —
the judgment of approbation passed upon it.

3
This last case is exemplified
when the
affections set up
as it were another
judgment to take
cognizance of
a persuasion entertained
in order
to pr approve of it
more in
the strongest manner
possible.
