Among the mischiefs of which the institution in question
is productive, these then are those which the ruling
few
to the in the perpetuation preservation maintenance of which the ruling few are

moral character by insincerity. 2. depravation of the
intellectual character by distortion and enfeeblement
of the judicial faculty.: 3. depravation of the intellectual
character by enslavement to the dominion
of influence: 4. depravation of the intellectual character
by to fear constant hatred and dread of the power of reason
5. Assistance given to the propagation of error.
6. Support given to misrule. 7. Obstruction opposed
to reform in all its shapes. 8. Obstruction afforded opposed to improvement
in its principal shapes. 9. General hatred
and dread of every thing that is good and not yet
come into practice.

of the practices
in question are these
to which the ruling
few are bound by interest.

In the creation or preservation of the following mischiefs
belonging to the same catalogue it has no other than
a collateral interest: they not being operating in the character of the direct instruments
towards the production of the partial good corresponding
to this their sinister interest, but only produce connected concomitent
to them as being produced in

with them in the character of concomitant effects produced
by the operation of the same causes: — 1. Pain
of self-condemnation produced by the consciousness of the insincerity.
2. Pain of humiliation produced by consciousness
of merited disrepute contempt and
experience of the contempt
by [mirrored by the moral and intellectual
depravation abovementioned] with which minds thus
depraved debilitated and distorted are will naturally
be looked down by strong and unpolluted minds.
