In the two others there exists not any the least on any occasion, unless
by the merest accident, any the least likelyhood that there should be the least particle of truth.
Whatsoever may have been the arguments or other
consideration by which a the man has been led into the
formation and declaration of the opinion in question
whatever it be, it is not in the nature of punishment
— if it is not in the nature of fear of punishment
especially of punishment at the hands of man, either
to take any thing from the force of any of them, to take
any thing from the number of them, or to add either
number or force to whatsoever arguments or
other consideration may happen to be operating on the
other side.

On the contrary other hand, if by any such afflictive application or
of the apprehension of it, the whatsoever if so it be that
any influence at all is exercised on the intellectual
faculty — exercised in the judgment, the natural result
suited to the nature of the case, is — that its tendency
should be [to render him] instead of being
less determined in a less degree causing weakening his persuasion
to change sides or weakening it causing it to change sides to render fix it in
the side which it had taken and render it in that same
side to render it stronger than it was before.
