Church II
Ch. Recantation

5 5

Nay not so says the advocate of attending, for
even admitting it to be true that by support given to
this heterodox doctrine, profit in the sh pursuing
profit may not in any determinate shape or quantity
or shape have been in prospect (— not but that
from the sale of the most pestiferous discourses profit is unhappily
obtainable as well as from the most salutary —) yet
still there remains a thing called reputation and a
thing called power neither of two things which are not either of
them without their its value: reputation and power —
both of them in the world is constituted sources of pecuniary
profit as well as of each other.

Yes, replies the defender of the liberty of prophesying
True it is that in this indirect and accidental way, profit
even in a pecuniary shape may as well as power
and reputation and praise be reaped and these may be expected,
by the advocate supporter of heterodoxy. But in all these shapes
— in every imaginable shape compare the utmost maximum profit
capable of being made by heterodoxy with the utmost maximum profit
capable of being made by orthodoxy, this comparison
made, think whether if the hope from one in contradistinction
to the fear of God had in the breast of this heretic
been the ruling motive, the banner under which he would
have enlisted himself could have been any others than
those of orthodoxy [+]
[+] which to whatsoever
it can be in
the power of heterodoxy
to display, add so many
which are exclusively
their own

[rich and inviting as it is in the power
of gold to make them] [these splendid resplendent banners in which
every thing that glistens is of the most solid gold.]
