Not said protegé
is not guilty: said,
1. he is not to blame.
i.e. in defrauding Revenue,
injuring fair
trade, poisoning ,
no blame.

What has above the very Reverend intercessor does
not venture to say is that his protegé was not has not been guilty
of the offence of with which he stands stood charged. But what
he does venture to say that be that matter
as it may, the his said protegé "has not in reality been
"to blame". Guilty of defrauding the revenue that
and of endangering the health of his Majesty's subjects?
Guilty of injuring the fair trader — of picking the pockets
of his Majesty's subjects with one hand, and poisoning them
with the other — and yet not to blame?

10
Alleged causes of
blamelessness — 1
poisonees only Ale-
drinkers — 2 Source
of prosecution, malice.

The Of this
absence of purity from blame two causes though not in form and as such asserted
are not the less plainly intimated: one is that the persons
whose health is injured are "only ale-drinkers;"
the other is, that it was in malice that the in malice
in the heart of a somebody not mentioned that the chance
and as it has proved to be of the applying
a check to the practice of defrauding the revenue and
endangering mens health the health of his Majestys subjects took its rise. "I should
"be very sorry to have that usefulness diminished by his
"being brought forward to the public in a matter which
concerns only ale drinkers, and I fear has its source
in malice, for I will venture to say Mr Abbot
"has not in reality been to blame."
