Employable in future.

In the f

In the foundation of funds of reward for arguments
in support of orthodoxy — of in support of points of doctrine established by
law — men have been eased by custom of all shame.
Regard for truth is not so much as professed. The
reward is offered and given — not for shewing what
on the point in question is the truth, but for taking
in hand the side in question, and proving whether this
can be so or no proving that the truth side
using endeavours to persuade men that truth is on that
side. Reward thus offered and bestowed presents one
of the many instances in which
is in its operation (need it be said?) in fact a premium
for mendacity. It is moreover if not absolutely a
confession some thing very like a confession — that in
the opinion of the founder [truth is not on that side.
For if it were be what need is there of the precaution
of preventing it from making its appearance on the other
side?] of excluding all argument on the other side.
Take the other side, instead of a premium you may receive
a summons to the King's Bench: for "Christianity"
says a King's Bench maxim, in the strength which men have
been convicted and punished "Christianity is part of the law of
"the land:" and Christianity is any thing that a man
, when in who, on that occasion, occupies the situation of criminal Judge. What
after the greatest deliberation, and nicety of distinction definition and limitation
no Parliament dare would dare to do, has thus by four
lawyers in the situation of Judges, or rather by one lawyer
in the situation of Chief Judge, been in the compass of a single
line: and this without any need of bestowing a thought on the subject,
except for
except for giving to that
line the turn that
shall best suit
the predetermined purpose.
