From the Examiner of Sunday May 19th. 1816 —
Religious Persecution in 1816!! — We have this
week to record a most disgraceful instance of persecution
in our own neighbourhood; thirty-one men,
in the employ of Lord Grosvenor, having been discharged
from his Lordship's works, at Halkin, Flintshire,
for no other reason than that they were
Dissenters from the Established Church. Previous
to their dismissal, they were informed, that unless they
would conform altogether to the practises and forms
of the Established Church, they should no longer
have work; to this these poor but noble-minded
Welshmen replied, "they could not submit to that
kind of Bondage. They were consequently turned
adrift, and other labourers employed in their
places. About a fortnight ago they addressed
a most respectful petition to the Noble Lord,
in which they stated the number of their respective
families; and the length of their servitude, many of
them having been from 15 to 20 years in his Lordships
