Introd. IV
Rep. Spur

Now if that piece of Jewelry had any determinant meaning at
all — which is what the author of it has taken effectual
care it should not have — it let the considered
in the character of an argument in favour of the exclusion
system which it is employed to justify, let the sincere
reader judge whether it be not this — viz. that be the
religion what it may [+]
[+] be it ever so full
of faults and
errors

so long as it remains the
religion of the country — so long as the people
of the country, on pain of being subjected to a multitude
of temporal disadvantages continue to be forced
not only to employ the formularies and ceremonies or set of rules thus imposed upon
establishment
them but to declare that they approve of them
whether they approve of them or no, there is not
common sense either in entertaining or expression any sentiments
of disapprobation in relation to these formularies declarations of persuasion
ceremonies, or rulers.

In this plan what means meant to be the word country?
was it the Government of the country? then the sense is
that what ever is the religion professed by the ruling members of the
government of a country there is not common sense
in its being regarded with disapprobation by the subject
many.

In the reign of Queen Mary of England then there was not common
sense in the part breast of any such part of the subject
many as were protestants

The like in the reign of Queen Mary of Scotland

At present the K subjects of the King of Saxony are what
for ages they have been, Protestants. But the King himself is a
Catholic. Ergo says this Archbishop of Canterbury — for such is
his
logic, the people of
Saxony with the
exception of such of
them as profit if the
religion of the Court
have all common sense.
