Introd. IV
Rep. Spurious
§.9. Actors who?
Archbishops speech
31 May 1816

2

So long as the the religion of the country government
a man born under which a man was born is the
religion of that government, what signifies what it is?
what good reason for regarding it with hostility or
so much as with indifference what good reason can
he have. Is not one religion as good as another?

Thus without being aware if it in relation to religion has not this man
given us a picture of his mind? Has he not declared
in effect though in other words has he not in effect
declared very declared that in his eyes — so
it be but established one religion is as good as another
or that in his eyes all established religions be they ever
so good or ever so bad are alike.

Here in this c kingdom containing about 11 10 million
of inhabitants are about 1,500,000 whose sentiments
in relation to the object in question are those of what
he calls hostility: besides who can say how
many millions whence though joining themselves
to any of the un-established Churches the same object
is an object of indifference. To confute these or to
convert them there is no saying which for what
he says is just as good for the one purpose as
the other what he gives them to understand is — that
they have not common sense

Of these men people none of whom are in his Grace's
declared opinion in possession of any such article as common
sense, suppose any one, being in having a possession of a common
horsewhip had gone up and applied it to his
Grace's shoulders? The act would have been an assault
a species of personal injury, and as such justly punishable.
True: but in the character of an argument would it in
any one respect have been below the level of that argument of his
Graces
Graces which his
Grace was thus pleased
to employ in and by
the declaration that of
so many millions, as
had the presumption to
think or act in this matter
in a manner different
from his Grace and those
who thought a and acted as he does did are destitute of common sense.
