Introd. IV
Report spurious
§.9. Actors who?
Archbishops speech
31 May 1816

But while I am an enemy to all those situations places
and to the establishment which is composed of them, of all
the several individuals who are placed in them there
is not a single one towards whom the affections I entertain
are other than those of a friend. With some of them
in all others degrees I have been and am in terms of
amicable converse. No one of them in respect of that
vitious system of which he is at at once the source or instrument
and a victim has ever heard from my lips a syllable
in the way of reproach or contumely direct or indirect
Though from between them to me the distance is not less and thence from
me to them never have any of them been to me in my sight
never have they been in any my sight
Never to them or any of them ever have I prostrated
or ever to them or any of them ever shall I prostrate
either my understanding or my will. Having no benefice
to give which can be worth the compliance of them or any
of them was little will they — any one of them be disposed to prostrate their
understandings or their wills to mine. But if they there
were, neither could Paul nor Silas be more averse
to the acceptance of such worship sacrifice at the hands of those
to whom they preached than I should be to the acceptance
of such it at the hands of them their self-stiled unworthy successors.
Knowing Seeing how necessarily their imperfections are the results of
their situation, as little was I ever disposed to give expression
before any one of them to those sentiments of reprobation
which I have so long felt in relation to it, as to express
towards: myself in the company of persons of the female sex in terms of reprobation in
relation to that sex, or to annoy her by indecent
language.
