Extracts from the Account of the Proceedings of the Meeting
of the National Society at the Central School in Baldwin
Gardens Friday 31 May 1816 in the Morng Chronicle
of Wednesday 5 June 1816.

Now when the Committee came again before
the public, he was sure they would receive that
measure of support, which the cause of the education
of the poor in the principles of the Established church
demanded. These were indeed (and he would
not blink the subject) other modes of instruction
brought forward, as candidates for public bounty,
in which no fixt principles of religion were inculcated.
And though he should certainly not take
upon himself to condemn such education, yet
he felt obliged, as an individual, to confess that
he could not discover any sensible foundation on
which it could be rested. If, said his Grace, there
be faults in our establishment, let them he amended,
if there be errors, let them be corrected —
but, so long as it remains the religion of the country,
there was not common sense in any general
system of education, which brought up the people
in indifference or hostility to that establishment.
