Rid Yourselves
§.1. Prelimy Definitions.

Union between you
and Ultramaria, under
the same rulers, is
a burthen to you: rid
yourselves.
Proofs follow: judgment
yours.

Follow distinctions,
but for which, all truth
must be alloyed with
falshood.

In Spain,
1. Universal interest

Distinction third –
(applying to particulars).
1. Subject many's interest.
2. Ruling and influential
few's do.

the ruling, and otherwise
influential few, interest
of the aggregate, of particular
classes, and of
individuals.

Without practical error,
no one of these distinctions
can be over-looked.
To each class
belongs a particular
interest, liable to be opposite
to the universal:
so, to each member of

interest by an individual
is sure as often
as, in his eyes, the value
of his share in the
universal interest is less
than do. of the sum of
his share in all the
particular interests in
which he shares: deducting

Ultramarian dominion
by rulers, no net
profit (suppose) to universal
interest in
Spain by saving in taxes,
interests opposite
to it are
1. Universal interest,
each man's share in
it.

By supposition, expence
encreased. For
defraying it, sole resources,
forced contributions
or retrenchment
Hence, so far as retrenchment
is considered necessary,
all classes considering
themselves exposed
by the pursuit
to retrenchment, share
in a particular interest
thus far coinciding
with the universal.
These are
1. Royal Family.
2. Royal family's private Servants.
3. Cortes Members.
4. Members of Administration.
5. Judiciary
6. Clergy
7. Patrons with relation to the above six.
8. Expectants with relation to the above six.

Yet no scarcely an individual is the

out of the expenditure

not be created, overbalancing
his share in the universal
interest, and

case.

added the Army, but
for the particular
destructiveness and
hatefulness of the theatre
of war in this
case.
