Rid yourselves

Letter i. Plan of this address

1.
Generalities, J.B's opinions,
these –
1. From maintenance
to yourselves injury
1. to the most immediately
sensible part,
purse: to taxation, not
decrease but encrease:
to opulence not encrease
but decrease – this, even
supposing in all-Ultramaria
cordial submission
which in every
part is impossible.

2.
2. Injury to Constitution:
by maintenance, successful
or unsuccessful,
all the good destroyed:
limited monarchy brot.
back to absolute: viz
1. Rulers with opposite interests
poured in: mass
of corruption thence, without
need of acts of do. encreased.
Not only executive
but legislative, the
precautions taken being
not a bar but a cloak

5.
From relinquishment,
honour not decreased
but encreased: relinquishment,
not romantic nor unprecedented:
unprecedented indeed so far
as voluntary, in Monarchies
absolute or limited:
precedents numerous
in U.S. confederated Representative
democracy
J.B. will not only show you how
by such relinquishment
men are honored, but
force you to honor them.

6.
5. Sole gainers, Functionaries,
Executive and Legislative:
viz by power
and money, operating
of itself in corrupting
both the supposed safe-guards:
constituting them forming not a
bar but a cloak cover to
misrule.

7.
6 Relinquishment should
be entire: the
or smaller – any remnant
retained, the greater the ratio
of the general and unreducible
expence to any
supposed profit from it. profit supposed to be received.

8.
7 Mode of relinquishment.
J.B. will show that
which will be best for
both parties.

9.
This address, copy to people
not to rulers: to supreme
constitutive power,
not do. operative do.,
made to people not absurd:
absurd if made
to rulers: not absurd to
say – cause them thus to
pursue your interests:
or what you think such.

10.
To rulers, none of this
will be the less visible.
People, be it your care
that your Rulers do this:
Rulers do this, lest by omission
you cease to be
what you are.

11.
In this so general sketch,
it has been possible
to make here and there
distinct mention of the
separate interests. No so
in the detail. Hence the
order of the matter could
not be exclusively governed
by this distinction
regarding interests.

12.
No two objects can be more
intimately connected than
on this occasion the interests
of the two parties:
the interest they both have
in separation: during
time of Government, continual
and irreconcileable
enemies: after separation,
nearest and
dearest friends.
