Rid Yourselves

§. 1. Interests concerned.
§. 7. Clergy, interest against the claim

27.
II. Clergy – Assumption
here made. No pecuniary
retrenchment or other
change inconsistent with
the purity and perfection
of Catholicism can be
made.

28.
But, to this, not necessary
is a maravedi received
from forced contributions.
Witness all
countries where Catholicism
is not establishd.
England, Scotland, Ireland,
Denmark, Sweden
– non Catholic provinces
of Prussia and
Russia.

29.
In Spain, Clergy are
Regular or Secular.
Characteristic of Regular
non-reddition of any local
(sole determinate)
service. These accordingly
are not functionaries.
To this case are all, in
so far as they have no
cure of souls.

30.
As to secular do., sole
here assumable supposition
as to the number
of the benefices is non-superfluity. The office being excepted,
sole competent subject
for defalcation, the
emolument. For example
of the quantum necessary,
see Ireland –
not decreased but doubled
her Irish Catholic
population since the Revolution
in 1688, under
English inhumanity
and oppression.

§. 1. Interests concerned.
§. 7. Clergy, interest against the claim

31.
In Clergy's case, same
regard due to possession
and vested expectancy.
But Clergy having no
natural successors,
thence, nor vested expectants,
retrenchment is
proportionably facilitated.

32.
Without suffering i.e.
real evil, no Member;
in case of retrenchmt,
could be left inadequately
compensated. Without
any real evil, so as
all were adequately
compensated, the whole
property might be applied
to national exigencies.

33.
Labour applied otherwise
than voluntarily
to pay for clerical service
is so in a measure
worse than useless: in
contempt of him who
forbad all riches. By every
receipt of such pay,
stronger proof is given
of unbelief than can
be given by words. The
trusts in riches: i.e. in
their corruptive and
delusive power. The
more money is received, whether
the service be rendered
or not.

34.
Employing riches in
seducing men from
professional duty belongs
no more to Catholicism
than Protestantism.

§. 1. Interests concerned.
§. 7. Clergy, interest against the claim

35.
Suppose riches in large
masses, as per establishments,
necessary to Catholicism,
four fifths of
Irish population would
stand excommunicated
for want of riches, disqualified
for want of
an accompaniment
pronounced by the founder
as ground for excommunication.
