§ Relinquishment honorable
Slave-holding ceased

Another honor without
cost: riddance of
the foulest leprocy: required,
not so much
as a dip.
In Spain no man
buys or keeps Slaves.
Doing so, a Spaniard
leaves Spain or sends
his money out of it.
True, says somebody,
morality inviolate,
conscience unwounded,
dishonor escaped.
But how honour
gained?

Answer. True: in itself
the honor is but
negative. But, from
comparison and contrast,
honor illustrious
as positive. Your
place will be above
France, England, Italy and
above U.S. whose place is
in so many other scales
so high above others.
Of France the least
said here the better:
that atrocity in the
aggregate may be maximized,
it is so in this
line: for a zest to the
enjoyment of atrocity,
treaty-breaking perfidy
added.

Slave-buying I put
aside. Of slave-holding
alone I here speak:
Wide is the distinction:
To abstain from slave
buying requires but
a negative act:- do.
from slave holding
&c. a complication of
arrangements such
as the eye is lost in.

Think then of Slave-
holding, and the part
England has in it.
Nowhere any Slave-
holding in English European
Europe England: nor, I hope, in
English Continental
America. Only in do.
American isles. Of the
population there, the
greater part slaves to
the few: Whether a man
shall be treated as man
or beast depends on
colour. These few are
not only all subjects
of the King, but many
inhabitants of the soil
of England. In England
whip not exercised,
but its produce enjoyed.
Possessed of mammon
in the acquired form,
a West Indian may
be in selling the many to the one – not only Elector,
but Elected, as if born
in England.

Not so, at least it neither
need nor ought,
were England rid of
her Ultramaria. Nor
will you, were you
rid of yours. Given to
themselves, they should
be left to themselves.
With the benefit of emancipation,
they shd.
have all inconvenience
attached to it:
else your riddance
not complete.

See now the crown
to your glories. You
above U.S.! They first
in the endeavour to stop
the traffic. Still the
poisonous result is in
their veins. Not so well
can they be thought of,
or hoped for, while it remains
there. In Congress
how long can virtue
dwell, when in so many
housholds the views
of slavery & of despotism
have unlimited encrease?
To my declaration that
the Constitution is framed
for eternity, comes
always the proviso that
this stain be washed
out. Till then, copy her
Constitution – copy her
in your maturity as
you have in your infancy, your place will
be not merely on a level with last above hers, nor thereafter
can her's be above yours.
