Rid Yourselves
Letter 1. Plan
A word or two as to the order here proposed. As far
as the nature of the case admitts of, In all my endeavour will be
to keep sep present in a separate point of view the effects produced
by the claim in the interests of your Ultramarian burthen
a from the effects produced by it nor in a more immediate
way as yourselves. First I will shew lay before you the mischief evils
well about those who pressed in the claim and doing afflicting you, mischiefs
in which were such now apply bear more immediately upon
yourselves: after that I will my endeavour will be to
lay before you those mischiefs which bear more immediately
upon them. This latter source of evils what are they to
us – may be to the actually to the question of some among
you though I hope not of all of you. To those such men
this answer is the appropriate one. The greater more intolerable their suffering
the more obstinate will be their resistance, their endeavour
to be rid of it: of those who have cast off the yoke, to keep
it from being again fastened on their necks: of those who still
are oppressed burthened with it, to cast it off.
True it is that in their opinion of them, I speak to them.
But how can would I help it doing so? and why should I help it? Are
they not men as well as you? are they not bound to me
by the same that you were?

Unfortunately Unhappily, as between the two privileged classes and domineering
classes on the one hand part, and the unprivileged, unprotected and
unprotected purely subject class on the other, the competition is as
between two mutually linked chains of iron on the and
a rope of sand: the two privileged classes – chains of bondage
by which the body of the subject many is encompassed: the vice
entering into the soul of it.
