Presented in the most general point of view terms, which in relation to this great momentous subject, have for thirty years been mine, and which for your sakes it is my endeavour to render yours, are these. [ namely that In every point of view, not only the claim to itself but the domination is, but the domination itself, supposing it in your possession and entire, would be - to you the people - to you the greatest number the source of unmixt evil ; of evil, in all manner of shapes: of evil, in a pecuniary shape ; of evil in the anticonstitutional shape ; of evil, in the shape of national insecurity security against foreign aggression. 1. First then as to the evil in the pecuniary shape: evil in that simple shape in which it bears upon the most immediately sensitive part of each mans personal frame. In this branch of the evil the effects I see pouring forth are these. 1 As to the burthen which you will have to sustain in the shapeway of taxes, so far from being diminished by such dominion, I see it receiving from that very source a boundless increase. 2 As to the sum of your wealth, so far from its being increased I see it diminished: diminished - even supposing (what is impossible) that those, over whom the dominion is claimed, should, in any proportion - nay, though it were universally - be, in the first in-stance, desirous of being subject to it.
