1828 June 28 Collectanea
Canada
Morn Herald June 28th 1828.
Lower Canada, April 5th

I have nothing new to communicate-
no change has transpired worth writing about at present.
All here is perfectly quiet. Our great political
champions are gone to England, to fight out the battle
between the Governor and House of Assembly.
Some great change must be effected, and that shortly,
for as the laws of this province are all limited to
time, the most important are every day expiring,
which is productive of much inconvenience. For
instance, the Militia acts not having been renewed,
the whole population is now called out three times
in the year, instead of once: besides, no appropriation
is or can be made for the legal payment of any officers
of the State. Although the Governor is personally
very obnoxious to the Canadians, yet his recall to?
not mend matters a little. The sore would be plastered,
but not healed - there must be a radical change
either by a union of the provinces, or by a representation
of all the townships in the House of Assembly:
for while the French party can command an
overwhelming majority in the House, there will be
no peace, no improvement, no security for person
or property. They wish for no amelioration of the
condition % of the country. If we ask for registry
offices, for the security of property, for County fasts,
for passable roads,— indeed, for any thing that has a
tendency to improve the Country, and better the
condition of it's inhabitants, what is their answer?
Their maxim invariably is, "Such things answered
"well, and were good enough for our ancestors,
and why not for us? In fact, neither they nor the
priesthood wish to progress one atom for the old
feudal customs of the Country.
