Book of Church Reform Preface or Introduction
(4)

Of this extract the title has been suggested by a
work of Dr Southey: – namely "The Book" of the Church (so it is pleased
to call itself) The Book of the Church: – The Book; as who
should say is the only Book: for that when it has pleased
Dr Southey take a subject in hand, it belongs not to any
other hand to presume to meddle with it: – The Book of
the Church – a sort of appendage or accompaniment to
The Book of Common Prayer.

The association thus formed with that work of the
Poet Laureate had two presented itself as having two cases
– the in a affording to this little work a sort of passport to the minds more or less acquainted with
that large work; not the engaging them
to turn to the work of the professed champion of the Church
for the sake of seeing what sort of defence was therein made
against the of the whole edifice in a Book which had
for its object either nothing at all or that same defence.
