Preface and Introduction
Beverley
10
So much as to Dr Southey.
Another Gentleman who though in a very different way, is rendering still more powerful
assistance to our cause is Mr R. M. Beverley: a Gentleman of whose pamphlet
intituled a Letter to his Grace the Archbishop of on the corrupt
state of the Church of England the March 1 Chronicle of June 1831 speaks as having on
that day arrived already at a seventh Edition.
Of This His attack is performed Of the attack made by him on the tottery fabrick, peremptory for the acknowledgement
that it is conducted
with great spirits, wit, and disguise.
But by it the demand for the reprint demands for the present reprint is not many degree
super. His expression of the depravity of the system Striking and expressive as it is, rambling and without
excursive and somewhat desultory will be seen to be his expressions of
by him his expression is formal in a Rambling
the corruption he has taken in hand. Methodicalness and
way and without method. all-comprehensiveness, not being aimed
at by him, is have of course not been attained. can not be attained
Then comes his plan of reform; which accordingly may be seen to be in a correspondent
degree be seen to be unmethodical; unjustif and
howsoever justifiable, unjustified and unexampled.
This Under these several heads, compare it now with the ensuing work of Mr Bentham. This Being all-comprehensive
and correspondently methodical, whosoever may feel
himself disposed to look at the one and the other of these two works
at the same time, will do well to take the in Mr Bentham's work
to begin with reading the work of the experienced Jurist: and then, after
in the first instance, and then taking note in the first
place, taking note under each head head of the several disorders charged by him on
the Establishment, with the proof given of the truth of them respectively, —
to take in hand the pamphlet of Mr Beverly and under that
same hand note what is said by him: and so as to the
remedy; as proposed and described, under the head of each of its parts,
by Mr Bentham. [+]
[+] This task we had made
some progress in pursuing
for our readers: but, upon
second thought reconsideration preferred
the leaving the performance
of it to themselves.
In saying this of Mr Beverley, that he has not done
that which he had not professed to do, and which we are confident
he did not so much as intend to do, — we hope and
trust we have not done to him any injury, or to that can
which belongs to him and is in common, any disservice.
In and by what we are thus saying in relation to his work, we call
upon it the attention of our readers: and to such as have not yet
read it, we venture to promise much entertainment, and no inconsiderable
quantity
quantity and variety of
appropriate instruction from the perusal
of it.
