In this, as in every work of his, maximization
of happiness is the object or say end-in-view of the
author of these pages

In his work intituled Chrestomathia in
which a tabular view or say an Encyclopedical Table was given of in several branches of art-and-
science under the guidance of the greatest principle
which corresponds with and serves to point to the rule
endeavour on each occasion to add as much as may
to make an addition as large as may be to the sum of happiness
the branch of science commonly called Mathematics
could not but have place

Posology, a name borrowed from the Greek, in
imitation of Chronology, Geology and so many other
words terminating in the these same two syllables was then
stated as being expressive, apposite, appropriate, and
adequate: its meaning being that branch of art and
science which has for its subject matter quantity

of necessity was Mathematics
in the Title

But this of this word the meaning not being as yet generally understood
the word denomination not yet in universal use, as here, in whatsoever
degree unapt, of necessity put in front and employed
in the title to the work
