Book of Church Reform.

ulto
Preface Introduction
Southey

4

In that same work intituled Church of Englandism examined
Mr Benthams object had been to do what that which depended
upon him, in so far as it could be done consistently with
veracity, sincerity and justice towards causing the public in
general to think ill of the establishment he was then attending

Dr Southey, in his Book of the Church, had for his object
the causing of the public at large to think as well as it was in the his
power to cause them to think of that same Establishment:
whether in any way and what degree the reserves which as above we have been stating
as having place in the case of Mr Benthams apply to the have place
case of Dr Southey, is a question in which ones reason will
presumably, be called upon to pr make answer to themselves

In the endeavour By any thing which he could find to say, and thought
a to say in direct answer to these same charges
or any of them he saw no prospect of being able to act with
any effect: if he had seen any such prospect he would have
used his endeavours accordingly, and brought forward
his defences. The part which on this occasion he acted
was that of a prudent General: who occupying a post, which
by defence carried on in any direct way, he sees to be indefensible un
betakes himself in a last recourse to the expedient of endeav
of carrying on the business of defence in an indirect way, by endevouring
to make a diversion.

What way that diverse? The publication of a work
in which, by a tissue of vague generalities, in which the different
sets of men who of whom at successive periods was constituted the
body called the Church of England in one of its the several
different senses of that appellation were taken for the subject of
general, and little if at all ind discriminating dogma
the last of all the different sets of men thus noticed being those who
were living and in office in the Year 1688
