II Principles
VI Way in which the proposed
means will operate

8
Principles without
individually assignable
ends determinate nothing
— recommended by J. B.
All else is nonsense

8. No First as to principles. — No law, no regulation, —
no enactment — no arrangement, no measure, no institution,
do I ever take upon me to propose — that has not had in my
mind, some determinate and assignable principle or set of principles for its a sin
that, upon reference made to me, will not be seen to have some
such determinate assignable and intelligible principle or set of principles for its grounds

I say assignable meaning individually assignable having
some determinate meaning
intelligible: not composed of nonsense: for how
familiar so ever it be to the , and how well satisfied with it I
others may be, on no occasion can I ever be satisfied
with nonsense

9
Example
1. Every principle of Justice
2. First principle of Justice
3. I have a right to this.
4. It is my opinion that ...

9. Take an example or two —

Every principle of justice: for example: — the first principle
of justice, altogether unmeaning locutions these: by
— on whatever occasion uttered, by whomsoever uttered — no
better than nonsense: sounds or characters without sense: signs without things
signified — vox et proxima nihil: utterance given to it is not
talking: it is braying. You who thus make reference to these same
principles, as if all men every man knows what they are — be pleased to tell me what they are.

10
I have a right to this

10. Now for an equivalent some thing not very different "I have a right to this" — (naming the
subject matter in question). This being uttered in argument with an
antagonistic answer antagonist, answer, of equal sense and force is made by the antagonist
if he says — "No: you have no right to this." The claim to d
decide decide = to determine the course to be taken, by the conduct of those to whom it belongs to act is thus reduced
to nothing.

11
It is My opinion is —

11. Another equivalent. "It is "My opinion that is that —" so and so — equally
valueless in the character of an argument a reason or that some opinion, how
clear so ever it be whose so ever it be, and how clear
so ever it be said to be. This same opinion of yours either it has Thr
reason either this or that some determinate reason or set of reasons for the source and ground of it, or it has not: if not,
has none, then then is it is it valu by the supposition, valueless: if it has any such
reason, let us see what it is the that same reason is: stript of separated from the reason
or reasons the opinion is s valu valueless as before in this case as in the other.[ ]

and note — that, by a reason I mean on every occasion
on which the question is what course shall be pursued by
human conduct, I mean on each occasion, a considera
an observation indicative of the influence which the course of conduct
to which a sentiment of approbation or disapprobation is
applied, the influence it is believed to have on happiness.

on human feelings.
on pains and pleasures.
or in one word, on
happiness. Whatsoever
has no such influence,
or in any way is inapplicable irrelevant, unworthy of all regard.
