The Book of Church Reform + +

Preface

6

Then as to religion: and the religion of Jesus in particular
and more particul the Church of England edition of it, and most of all the
University of Cambridge one of the two of Unity Church head Schools of it
Look at the University of Cambridge
Is there not a functionary — a paid functionary: put into and
kept in office by the stile and title of the Christian Advocate?
And the Christian Advocate — can he advocate the religion
of Jesus according to any edition is it other
than that published by the what on this occasion is called Church of Englandism? by
that is to say by the rulers of the Church of England? Well then in taking upon
himself that same stile and title of Christian Avocate shd he not — this sacred Advocate profess
the same indifference between right and
wrong, and truth and falshood, as is entertained and
professed by all profane Advocates? And a late Christian
Advocate for example in his defence of Church of
Englandism against an attack made upon it by a work
intituledNot Paul but Jesus shd he not give a signed
and incontestable exemplification of that same indispensable
and universally not merely but positively
be indifference.

Look at the Debtor in the two Johns —
And therefore it is that, in so far as it is established
every thing that is called religion is, if insincerity be any part of morality an irremediable enmity
to morality: establishment of religion meaning whatever else be
mentioned by it, be employing, in a direct way or in an indirect
way, reward and punishment one or both, in inducing men to
profess to this or that opinion, how adverse to it so ever may be the
opinion entertained by them respectively in reality

And therefore it is that when in any country the existing Temple
of Imposture is pulled down, he would not, if it depended upon him, have
any other erected in the room of it, but on the contrary he would have the
spot
spot it was built on
left vacant: left in the
state it is in, in the
Anglo-American
States: where there
population for population
there is beyond c
more regard for religion than in England — the chair seat of insincerity, with its Church-building jobs, a la mode de Harrowby.
