Diffusion and advancement By one or other of these
two denominations will expression be given to the design or say
end in view whatsoever it be which has place in the
mind of any man writer who indictates to afford to his readers
any instruction or information in any shape in relation to the branch of
art and science commonly known by the name of

Diffusion exists in proportion
to number of possessors

Diffusion of the art and science in question will have place in proportion to the number of
the individuals by whom a precept is obtained in whose mind
correct ideas belonging to this branch of art and science are lodged.

Advancement, according
to the addition to present stock of ideas

Advancement of the this same art and science in question
has place in so far as addition is made with stock of correct
ideas lodged in the mind or minds of him or them by whom the
greatest quantity is at the time in question lodged

Of the present work the design is confined to the business of purpose diffusion
of the benefit thus denominated: this being the only one of
the two in which the author is able to discern any use
affording an adequate equivalent compensation for the time and labour
expended in the study of it
