Gentlemen! — to me it is matter of duty to speak thus
plainly: to you it is matter of duty to hear whatsoever is
said thus plainly it is matter of duty to pay attention
to it to profit by it and to that end to pay adequate attention to it,
it is matter of prudence not to testify resentment towards
any person by whom any suggestions are submitted to you,
whatsoever be the stile and manner in which such suggestions
are so submitted.

☞ 18 April 1831
Better omitt the whole
of what follows: and
pr what
goes before.

Quere are what follows.

About the commencement of March last, a relative of
mine, taking after taking in hand a copy of the Bill in question took
the liberty of publishing some Observations of his on the in
relation to it, followed by a draught of his prepared by him as
a succed in to it, to which was subjoined for the purpose of
facilitating the comparison was subjoined a copy of the official draught
itself.

In a periodical intituled The Literary Gazette for March
last appeared an article on the subject of that same publication
With unfeigned and heartfelt satisfaction was that article
viewed by myself that same relative and such all other friends of
mine by whom it has been seen or heard: of by myself, as I stand
perfectly assured: by him, in so far as I can stand assured of any
thing state of things the tenor of which has in any merit other than my own

Notice is therein taken that between that same relative and myself
the relation which has place is that between Nephew and Uncle
Profuse was the stream of pleasantry poured out upon the ground
of that same relationship. Uncle and Nephew. Hark! hark! hark
? and from this and a few altogether compleately similar promises
and such above, without any the smallest expense in any such
shape in that of reasoning or attempt thereat, was the
thus, to a degree of matchless absurdity the
observation was irrelevant and absurd, the draught which followed
them ill-adapted
