At parting, in July last Jonte informed me that by agreement
between him and Rivadaria he was Jonte was to translate the work or
Political Fallarces (Sophismes) which forms the 2d of the tres Volumes
entituled Tackque des Assemblees Politiques. Meantime a Spaniard.
Don Pedro Razan de Mendoza, Professor of Law in the University of St
Jago in Gallicia & and Member of the Royal Academy of Public Law at Madrid in the
time of King Joseph had been before hand with him : he, sometime
ago finished his a translation of the principal works in
three Volumes. In a letter from Montauban in France dated 4th December
1818, my Brother whom you saw at my house, speaking of Mendoza ,
and the book in question says "he has given it to be finished, and is
in treaty with a Bookseller at Nismes to forward it to the new Governments
in South America". "Cambronera" (says the letter at its
commencement) "has received a long letter from his friend Mendoza
which being in Spanish a great part was read to me in French
you and your works are spoken of in the strongest possible terms of
admiration and respect. Your name is never mentioned without the
adjunct of immortal or some such notion of superiority. He speaks
even with envy of Cambronera on account of his enjoying the
acquaintance of your brother." Cambronera my brother had informed
me in another letter had been Chief of the Department of Justice
under King Joseph : he and his next in authority who are now
living at Montauban a Prussian from Lewis 18th had been zealously
occupied in giving currency to my works at Madrid
during that short reign. Even antecedently to that period, an
Ecclestiastic, whose name was providently by a necessary reason kept secret had occupied
himself in giving gratuitous lectures on the basis of that
work to as many friends as he could trust with so dangerous
a secret. Such at least was the information given me some years
ago by his friend Blanco White whose name I suppose can
not be unknown to you neither of the periodical work published here
in Spanish. The Newton of Legislation was the among the appellations bestowed
upon me by Revadaria if credit is to be given to a disciple of
mine whom I had commissioned to confer with him, and who in a letter
by means of which he had gained admission into my hermitage, had spoken
