Postpone
Now as to what shall be done in counteraction of the
espionage. My first thought was to make a bellowing about
it in the Newspapers: and this I made a paragraph in a
letter I have been writing to Colonel who is in the country.
My second thought was to turn it against the intriguers.
and I therefore have suppressed that piece the talk that
had that paragraph, and our a letter without it is now
copying.
Between two marks which I will inform you of every
thing you read will be a quantity of untruth calculated to
mislead the spies and cause them to un to us opinions
and designs opposite to my real ones. I can tell you
for example in regard to Spain that I have given up or
have thoughts of giving up every thing that regards that
country: that I feel myself superannuated and am about
withdrawing myself from further affairs: that I am regarding
radical democracy with disgust and taking refuge
in Monarchy and Aristocracy that I recommend it to
you to do the same. Moreover whatever happens to be
my design at the time I may mentor it as being
falsely calumniously or at least falsely imparted to me.
You on your part may employ the same or some
corresponding sign: and you may take reason to be laud
the state of your government, arguing the truth with me
and telling me that I have taken up too unfavourable a
conception of it: and in particular you may throw in prayers
of any persons whom you may not suspect to be agents
in or privy to the espionage practice.
It will not be necessary this should be down to every
letter: only when the now and then: unless when there is
some particular reason for it.
