way of correspondence. I requested a leave of absence for 5 Months to come
to England, and this suspension, although contrary to the general instructions
which we have recieved from our Gouvernment, inasmuch as we
were directed to use all the diligence which the nature of the subject admits
of, was granted without difficulté.
In the articles which we have hitherto gone through, there is nothing
definitively concluded, we are to take every thing in hand again — so that
you must only consider the different general and particular titles which have
passed through the commission as attempts to which we are to return.
I am the Reporter of the Commission that is to say it is I
who have the initiative power and the conduct of the work. After having begun
under your auspices, after having declared that I was only proceeding according
to your Manuscripts, you have always all the moral certainty that
the case admits of that whatever you will do for us, even the whole of the Code,
without regard to what we have done, will be received with gratitude, examined
with care, and that if there be any point on which the commission does
not adopt your ideas, it certainly will not be the effect of negligence, of indolence, or

or of or of an unfavourable prepossession, for the contrary disposition has been
already plainly shown in the admission of your plan and the mode of treating the general and
particular titles. I think myself authorised to give you on this subject the
strongest assurance, and I am persuaded that there is no one of my Colleagues
who would not join with me to solicit from you the magnificent Work
which you promised one and which you alone are able to perform
