1821 May 11 To Arguele
Those who want Jury-Trial, what is it they
want is for, as a check to the Judge—to the professional
and permanent Judge— or as a cloak to him:— as
a cloak to him for any misdeeds he may feel himself
disposed to commit. If it is a check to him they wish
to have I can give them a Jury, that will be so: if it
be a cloak for him that they wish for, let them copy
what they see in book's: in books of English Law in general
& in Blackstone in particular. If the Jury they wish for
is a Jury that will do whatever they expect to find
agreeable to those who have the good things of Government
at their disposal, let them copy the French
Juries
