J.B. Q.S.P. to Dumont aux Philsophies près Genéve

6 Sept. 1822

Copy

The post mark shows me that your Letter of the 21st. last, was received here
on the 31st. When it was put into my hands, it was candle light, & had I endeavoured
to read it, my eyes would have failed before I could have got through it.
I reserved it for a bonne bouche: I laid it up in clover: temporary matters of a pressing
nature intervened, & somehow or other kept it out of my recollection, till this
morning. Had it been daylight when it was put into my hands, I should on that
same day have answered it. As to the Spaniards blasphemy, and my virtual complicity,
I know not what better atonement I can offer than you will find in the
extract copied in the other leaf. You are welcome to publish it, in all the Gazettes
of Christendom; add Mahometandom if you please, since it seems there is one
there. A propos of Gazettes, think of one now going on in Colombia: it is styled the
Anglo-Colombian: half Spanish, half English. The one in some parts of it, a translation
of the other: I have seen the two first numbers of it: it was commenced by
Hall, Lieutenant in England, Colonel in Colombia, the a most able & intelligent cooperator
& quasi-disciple – author of an admirable 8vo on Canada & the United States, &
another on France, with a capital chapter in it on the Charter Constitution. What I
am sorry for is – what I have just heard from Mill, though only in general terms,
that he is, or is about to be called off from that occupation to some official service.
What I am glad to hear is – that same commercial house in this City has made proposals
to young Miranda to go out from hence, & continue the editing of this same
Anglo-Colombian, the House furnishing funds; & that the proposal, with advice of Mill
has been accepted, & the young man is going into training under a Newspaper Editor, I
believe he of the St James Chronicle. Young Miranda has been a quasi-ward of
Mill's who reports favorably of him. It runs in my head, that I must have mentioned
him in my last.

Principle of Utility – is dead & gone. Greatest happiness principal has acceeded
