Sanctions.

The retributive is pain or pleasure, eventually expected at the heads of assignable
individuals, on account of % received. It had existence before either moral or legal
sanction: it has place without them, & in spite of them. Of all calls upon the legal
sanction; not made by the public functionary, it is the primum mobile. What can be
more distinct? legal & moral sanctions suppose the existence of third persons, having
no interest in the affair: retributive sanction operates independently of the existence of
all such third persons. In Dumont principe, the gap left by the omission of it may
perhaps not be very considerable, but in Code &of Deontology Private, I respect I shall not
be able to do without it. I forget what incident presented sympathetic & antipathetic as
distinct, but if they are really so, they are of minor importance, I found all of them incidentally
at work in the case of drunkenness: but the leaf is not to be found.

After the extract from Nunéz's letter Whatsoever might be the ease with my part, little did I suspect, that the reputation
of your part, would be any person, be considered as in any way affected, by my suffering to
stand, unerased & unenumerated upon, a passage, containing a common place compliment
extorted by the relative situations: a proprtiatory sacrifice made of the priest, an in atonement
for the sin of being self-exposed to the suspicion of supposing, that weakness,
could have place in the work of the God. To have omitted the passage would have
been falsifying hisNunéz's declared opinion, & misrepresenting it to my own advantage.
