his advancement owing to his conduct in the classes has not been
considerable; but the French master assures me that Thomas
pronounces French very tolerably, & that he can translate
the first pages of Miss Edgeworth's "Frank" into pretty
correct French. Such is the exercise which the boy has
recently performed in his class. A boy will not always perform
by himself tasks equally difficult with those
which he will execute in his class; but the French
teacher assures me that Thomas Place will accomplish
what I have stated by himself; at least that he could
do so six weeks ago And here I must remark, that
if the examination took place early in the vacation
Mr Place has not used us well in keeping us so long ignorant
of his feelings, & if it took place recently. Then
allowance must be made for six weeks absence from
School; for though I will allow that knowledge which
will not keep for six weeks of is of little value, yet
we must be aware that the knowledge of a young school-boy
is in a very different state at the commencement & at
the end of a midsummer's vacation —

will shew the rank of the boys for every week since
