Hertford College Abolition Question.
(3.)
Now then, what I will venture to say is
that if an examination upon this plan is announced
as to be performed at the end of a
certain competent length of time, with an assurance
that, to the number in question, situations
such as those in question, in possession or in expectancy,
as the case may be, shall be adjudged
to those candidates, by whom, in the judgment
of the majority of the Examiners, the highest degree
of aptitude in relation to those several branches
taken in the aggregate has been manifested, the
points in relation to which the examination is
to take place having been previously indicated in
a paper drawn up for the purpose, no need at
the charge of the Company will there be, for
any expence other than that of a pecuniary remuneration
for the several examiners, or such of them as shd.
choose to accept of remuneration in that shape.
In regard to expence, the expence of an appropriate
building for the purpose of the examination
in question, might by some, for aught I
can take upon me to say, be thought fit to be
incurred.
For my own part, provisionally at least,
I see not why the room we are at present sitting
in, might not answer, or be made to answer
the purpose.
