Hertford College Abolition Question
(4.)
Now then, in addition to this, what other
expence, I will venture to ask, can be stated
as necessary to the purpose, or so much as
useful? In which of all the several requisites
can any deficiency be reasonably apprehended?
1. On the part of parents, can there be any
want of desire to see their children possessed, or to
cause them to be possessed, of the several situations,
and for that purpose of the several qualifications?
2. Can there be any want of pecuniary power?
In the now existing seat and source of instruction
in question, I may venture to state
the annual expence to parents as not being
much, if any thing, less than £400 a year: I
have heard of instances, in which the expence
has exceeded that sum. But supposing a wish
to obtain the information with precision, few
things can be easier than the obtainment of it.
On the part of persons competent to administer
instruction, can there be any want, either
of power to administer it in the best shape
or of desire to administer it on the most moderate
terms. To no one of all these questions
do I expect from any Gentleman an answer
in the negative.
