Egypt. T.J. Galloway to J. Bentham – Information

1.
All the Officers of the
Pacha's disciplined army
are Turks.

2.
Can both read and
write Turkish and Arabic.

3.
The major part of
the Privates, (who are
all Arabs), read and
write Arabic.

the word of command
is given in Turkish.

4.
There are about thirty
thousand regular
troops, (all of whom
are Arabs, invariably);
but, as I before stated
are officered by Turks,
as in our East Indian
Native Troops and
English officers.

5.
The Pacha is in the
monthly receipt of all
the European Journals,
which are conveyed
to Egypt per the way
of Leghorn, Trieste,
Marseilles &, direct
from London per sea.
They are forwarded to
him by his different
agents who reside in
the principal cities
of Europe; and who furnish
him, by every post,
with the heads of all
interesting matter
both political as well
as commercial,
and the Journals serve
for reference as to detail.

Our posts arrive from
Leghorn and Marseilles
weekly, and sometimes
more frequently: that
is to say, we have fresh
arrivals from each of
these Ports weekly.

7.
The Pirates of the Red
Sea, commonly called
Wahallies, are not subjects
of the Pacha of
Egypt, though he conquered
them some
few years back, and
their chief was conveyed
to Constantinople,
where he lost his
head: his two sons
now reside in Kahira,
with cousins and
relatives and others to
the number of about
one hundred, as hostages:
they are all well
and handsomely supported
by the Pacha.

8.
The number of youths
that have been sent
to France, consists of
thirty seven; but there
are also several at
Leghorn and Piza –
studying.

9.
In London, there are
four, the officers of Ibrahim
Pacha
sons of the wife of
Mohamed Ali, by a
former husband.

10.
The names of those
young Turks in
London are as follows.
1. Ali Effendi.
