1828 March 12
Egypt. Information from T.J. Galloway

IV. Suez Canal for junction of Red Sea & Mediterranean

1 Miles from Suez to the nearest part of Lake M Bourloos 75 from thence to the nearest part of the Mediterranean 35.

2. Height of the surface of the water of the Red Sea at Highwater, above do. of the
Mediterranean 38 50 feet; rise, or descends 5 inches per mth.

3. Number of Locks necessary, three.

This, the result of actual survey.

From this difference of level it results that the passage
of the same ship, fit for sea navigation, from the Mediterranean
into the Red Sea is hopeless.

Red Moreover, if intent being confined by dunes the
Red Sea water even to be supposed to run towards the Mediterranean
the whole of Egypt would be level and kept under water.
