J.B. to Dr Southwood Smith. On Livingstons Code.
Q S P 19 Jan 1830
Dear Sir
I understand from Dr Bowring that at the instance
and expense of Mr John Smith MP you reedited Dr Livingston's
proposed Louisianian Penal Code as it then stood: I am not certain whether
he did not add that an article on this subject by you was sent
to and published in "the Jurist". Not long ago I had the honour of receiving from
Dr Livingston the letter a copy of which you will see in the herewith
inclosed printed sheet. As to the Penal Code which that letter
accompanied namely the Penal Code in an augmented &
amended state with the addition of a Procedure Code
Penal & Civil both which that same better served to
introduce overwhelmed as I am with business
of my own which admits not of any the least
postponement it is altogether out of my
power to do to it what he appears
to wish. As you have already taken
hold of & obtained complete mastery all
the subject perhaps you would have
no objection to the taking it in its present
state and out of it making an Article
for "The Jurist". The Jurist to whose Editors
I have Dr Bowring has mentioned the matter & they are prepared to
receive it from you. Perhaps you would have
no objection to the taking this same work
in its state. If this If it were agreeable
to you to pursue the course of usefulness you have
thus begun in it will be good news for the illustrious philanthropists
