The new Deputies are young to do wonders — as the
present ones did wonders at the beginning — Look at them
now — Confidence in men because the are new men is here assuredly
the strong position. To day I have have visited my
friends among the new deputies — & they are almost unanimous
in this, "Two years is too long" — They wont say
so when the first year is over.

You will see that your's of the 26/27 December is with
me. Unfortunately a Sheet of Letter the fifth is wanting.
N. 2. 3. & 4 & part of 5 are in the Press. The delays of printing
are intolerable.

Now what will you say? The intolerant articles on
Religion have all been approved & that without even a division.
Toreno who had by his conversations pledged himself
as it were to oppose them, was dumb-founded. I find that
the people of the Cortes are consoling themselves with
their vagueness, as if vagueness were not much more
in favour of the oppressor, than the oppressed — of the
strong; than the weak.

As perhaps your copy of the Proyecto de Cadizo is
the only one in England, you would do good service by
directing the attention of Black & Coulson to the subject
& getting them to lash these persecutors, — the spirit
of the Inquisition is in their bones.

I see your name printed in the Spanish papers
as having contributed £10. to the Barcelona subscription.
It seems a country can do without ministers. None have
yet been appointed here — but the attempt to put in men
for a short time, till their places can be occupied by our
(once) friends of the Cortes, has failed. A Committee
of the privy Council has been appointed to day to
make out a list for the King.
