JB to Herries Posology
Since writing the above I have seen my
brother from whom I obtained the informatn followg
A friend of his is Deputy Chairman of the St Catharine's
Dock Company & in that quality has the
direction of a bookkeeper & between 40 & 50 clerks
All the accounts were kept in the Italian mode.
One question which at the desire of my brother he put to this bookkeeper was — what
length of time do you suppose it wd take for a
man of ordinary capacity who was used to
the ordinary way of keeping accounts to
obtain a conception of the particulars in which
the Italian mode differs from the ordinary mode
in such sort as to be able to be able to make
out the meaning of an acct kept in the Italn
mode — the answer was perhaps about
a week
Another question was what length
of time do you suppose it wd require
for that same man to be able to comprehend
the import of an account kept
in the Italn mode as clearly & promptly
as he wd the same acct kept in yl ordinary
mode — the answer was — scarcely
less than a 12 month; about wht time & not
earlier he wd be able himsf to keep an acct as
readily in the Italn as in the ordinary mode —
