Friday Jany. 30. (9.p.m) 1818
Tell Mr Bentham. that Mr Francis — says before
he left New York, his friend the Governor, had
received the sheets containing Mr. B—s letters, that
he understood their contents generally from what the
Governor said of them, that the Governor not only
approved of their contents but also of the proposal made
by Mr. B— and is in his opinion a very likely
person to forward Mr. B—s object.
Mr. Francis also says that since he has been
in England he has seen Mr Benthams letters in some
newspapers printed in America — hence I conclude
Mr Adams caused them to be circulated in the
way it was intended they should be circulated, and
the probability is that they have been inserted in
a great number of the American newspapers —
Mr. Francis has read the papers on Codification,
is pleased, and improved he says by the perusal,
and willing to do any thing and every thing he can
to benefit his country, by forwarding Mr. B—s
object — he is I am sure a sincere man, proud
of his countrys freedom, and desirous of maintaining
it to the best of his ability, he and Adams Smith
are to be with me for a long gossip in a day or two
and nothing useful shall be neglected.
I have heard nothing from Mark Wilks altho I
have twice written to him. I suppose he is not in London
my man will enquire at his house tomorrow.
