and execution to be just? —

Thus on both sides though there seems to be
nothing of interest in any other shape in the case National
pride presents itself to me as opposing to good understanding
and good humour a bar of such strength that unless it be by
arbitration I know not how to anticipate the removal of it.

By arbitration nothing seems more easy.

Arbitrators who? Were the case a case of
interest the difficulty might be interminable: every thing might
depend upon the choice.

But in a case such as that in question
dice might be thrown or a Te-totum spun for it. Better
so than that it should be necessary for either party to be the
first to make a choice.

Without arbitration I wish I could see
how either party could without the appearance of humiliation
give satisfaction to the other: under arbitration I see not
how so much as the appearance of humiliation can have
place: in this way whatever is done is done not through fear
but in deference to the dictates of impartial justice.

The motives for this intrusion will I
trust speak for themselves. Above all things I beg of you
not to tax your politeness for so much as a single line
on the subject addressed to me. It would be to impute to me
